Vintage unused dance card for the annual Military Ball held May 8, 1931, for the Linsly Institute

-- the predecessor of the current Linsly School in Wheeling, West Virginia.

The 4" x 2-1/2" booklet covers are textured black leather.

The name on the embossed silver school seal on the cover is the "Lancastrian Academy" -- the school's original name when it was founded in 1814.

A small pencil is suspended by an orange braided cord, which also binds the heavy orange paper inside pages to the leather cover.

A piece of very thin textured tissue paper is inside both the front and back covers.

The inside pages of contain the announcement of the date and location of the Military Ball, the list of "patronesses" (mothers) for the dance, the list of military students and the unused dance card list.

The back page contains the name of the band playing at the dance -- "The Marylanders".

Founded in 1814 as a Lancastrian Academy -- using the Lancastrian method of education - Linsly is the oldest preparatory school west of the Alleghenies.

Formed as a coeducational school, by 1861 admission was limited to boys, and by 1877 the academy was transformed into a military school, and renamed the Linsly Institute.

In 1978

the military school structure was replaced with that of a traditional boys' college preparatory school.

In 1988, the renamed Linsly School again became a coeducational school.

CONDITION:

The leather covers and inside pages are both in excellent condition.

The tissue paper sheets are very brittle, and the front sheet is chipped and detached from the binding cord.
